KENNETH OBASI: HOW READING THESE BOOKS CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE

Potentials discovered in the pages of books

When was the last time you read a book, or a substantial magazine article? Do your daily reading habits center around tweets, Facebook updates, or the directions on your instant oatmeal packet? If you’re one of countless people who don’t make a habit of reading regularly, you might be missing out: reading books changed my life significantly, and just a book a friend borrowed me for a read, skyrocketed my subconsciousness towards considering taking a step beyond my comfort zone.

Dreams are discovered beyond comfort zones

A few years ago, I was stuck in between the devil and the red-blue sea, knocked down on my knees, trying to figure out what to do with my academic certificates and a bunch of talents. My relationships were unstable and my life seemed to be tearing apart. A friend had suggested I read a book; he narrated how his younger brother read the book and his life changed with testimony. I used to be interested in book covers, the designs and admired them. I hardly finished any book aside my discipline. I took a step of faith, read the book, and was confident enough to leave my comfort zone and headed for a greener pasture; little did I know I was going to stumble into something that changed my life for good.

I left Lagos, headed to Port-Harcourt on invitation by a friend who thought I had something tangible to offer. I squatted with him for just 2 days before he told me he would not put up with me. I was so confident and determined to work that I had already gotten a job within the 2days I stayed with him, even though my employer offered to pay me 8,000 Naira per month for a start teaching learners how to drive. My employer wandered why I had to accept the monthly allowance of 8,000 Naira having had seen my curriculum vitae; I had no option but to accept the offer however small. That same evening was when my friend told me I could no longer stay with him.

I got a call from a relative that same night, who asked if I was in Port-Harcourt, that his son said he saw me and had left the house to see me. I was like, 'HOW?' I never saw or told any of my relatives I was coming down to Port-Harcourt, and I was just there to answer for my younger cousin.

To cut long story short, my uncle invited me to his house since I had nowhere to go. He made sure I specified how long I was to put up with him, before he would discuss with his wife if I was to stay or leave. My uncle, God bless his spirit, a family man to the core, he taught me what family values meant.

He introduced me to the wife, a nice woman in the soul; after he had narrated my predicament to her, she inquired from me there and then if I would manage working in her book store, while looking for something better to do. My heart limped for joy. I was so excited that I accepted the 20,000 Naira allowance she promised to pay me per month. From 8,000 to 20,000 Naira! Grace must have followed me down to Port-Harcourt that was the 4th day already.

My first day at my aunt’s book store, I was already receiving induction; she instructed me I could read any of the books when I would be less busy as long as I would be willing to place them back neatly on the shelf. I did not care reading books outside my discipline. I started reading books, one at a time and my life changed. I started buying some of these books from my little savings. You can do the same today at a click of this button to view some of these collections.

My life experienced a U-turn when I started reading these books; my mind was stimulated, I started gaining confidence, my memory pattern improved, I could think and argue logically without incurring enmity, my sense of responsibility spurred, my scope of knowledge expanded and my relationship improved.

You can only discover others when you have discovered yourself

The good news is that I got a better job before the stipulated time I agreed to stay with my uncle elapsed; I approached job interview with confidence and I didn’t miss getting employed. One thing I would like leaving with you is that reading is to a mind what exercise is to the body. You would like finding out how to make reading a daily exercise in our next expository.
