CONSIDERATIONS FOR SETTING UP AN NGO IN NIGERIA

ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE: No strategic plan ever works without an organizational structure to drive the goals, vision, mission and objective of the organization. The NGO organizational structure is usually divided into three (3) major parts: The Board Members (usually the Incorporate Trustees), The Executive Council, and the Staff members.

The board is usually the governing body of the NGO headed by the Chief Executive Officer, who usually is the founder or successor of the founder; he appoints other board members he deems fit to be incorporated Trustees, into the board. They are the top management cadre that includes the Chief Executive, Solicitor, Special Advisors, Comptroller general of accounts, Directors among others.

An NGO’s trustee must be at least 18 years of age; he/she must not be declared bankrupt; he/she must be of sound mind; and he/she must not be a convicted fraudster. Basically, a trustee must be someone with a credible income source. By law, the trustees who form the board for NGO, have control over its finances, management and operational pattern among others, without undue harassment or interference any third-party, including the Federal/State/Local government.

The Executive Council is usually the operational body that controls the decision makings of the NGO; they are subdivided into Admin Manager, Operational Manager, Public Relation Officer, Corporate Services Executive, Executive Secretary, Financial Secretary, Human Relations Officer, among others.

The staff members are usually the ‘boots on ground’; they include the project managers, field trainees, volunteers, donors among others. They are the ones who drag the NGO programs to the targeted audience.
